Recommended Health and other issues regarding Sheep in Central Florida
A Florida OVCI is required for all sheep in exhibition at the Central Florida Fair, including market lambs.
- USDA Animal ID's are required
- CDT vaccination should be given to confined sheep annually.
- FAMACHA sheep monthly to identify anemia issues caused by the Haemonchus Contortus parasite or "barber
pole" worm. If parasites are present, use a wormer and rotate brands every 3-6 months of use. (Remember
that FAMACHA is not the only solution for parasite issues in sheep)
- HACCP practices should be followed.
- Other Controls for Coccidiosis, External Parasites, Pneumonia (Average temp for sheep 102.3 degrees)
- Clean (free from mold, bugs, and rodents) feed and water.
- Clean, dry pens help prevent Pink Eye and Foot Rot.
- Hooves should be inspected and trimmed as needed.
- Dock and Castrate as needed.
- Monitor sheep/flock for abnormal signs and behaviors. Quickly assess and apply appropriate strategies to
prevent additional health issues.
