Recommended Health and other issues regarding Sheep in Central Florida
A Florida OVCI is required for all sheep in exhibition at the Central Florida Fair, including market lambs.
  1. USDA Animal ID's are required
  2. CDT vaccination should be given to confined sheep annually.
  3. FAMACHA sheep monthly to identify anemia issues caused by the Haemonchus Contortus parasite or "barber
pole" worm.  If parasites are present, use a wormer and rotate brands every 3-6 months of use. (Remember
that FAMACHA is not the only solution for parasite issues in sheep)
  4. HACCP practices should be followed.
  5. Other Controls for Coccidiosis, External Parasites, Pneumonia (Average temp for sheep 102.3 degrees)
  6. Clean (free from mold, bugs, and rodents) feed and water.
  7. Clean, dry pens help prevent Pink Eye and Foot Rot.
  8. Hooves should be inspected and trimmed as needed.
  9. Dock and Castrate as needed.
  10. Monitor sheep/flock for abnormal signs and behaviors.  Quickly assess and apply appropriate strategies to
    prevent additional health issues.
